Aquawind: Offshore Wind Energy with Sustainable Expansion
The Aquawind prototype validated a floating offshore wind platform, paving the way for the technology’s future expansion.
The launch of the Aquawind prototype marks an important step in offshore renewable energy innovation in Portugal. After an intensive development process, the responsible consortium subjected the platform to rigorous testing in a controlled environment, simulating wind, currents and sea conditions to validate structural performance and safety before deployment at sea.
Strategic contribution
Aquawind combines a floating platform with wind generation and integrated environmental monitoring, contributing to the National Energy and Climate Plan 2030 and the Roadmap for Carbon Neutrality 2050. The project is co-financed by the European Union (Grant Agreement No. 101077600) and brings together partners including ACIISI, ULPGC, EnerOcean, CANEXMAR, PLOCAN, Consulta Europa, the Canary Islands Maritime Cluster, WAVEC and INNOSEA.
The prototype’s success opens the way to future expansion, with more offshore units and the integration of storage and smart energy-management solutions, aiming to build a national value chain linked to the blue economy.
