As part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), the Portuguese Government launched a tender that will fund 43 electricity storage projects with an investment of around €100 million, aiming to install at least 500 MW of storage capacity on the public electricity grid. The investment aligns with the goals of the European Horizon Europe programme, which supports energy innovation, and aims to strengthen renewable integration and grid resilience.

Technologies and main beneficiaries

Supported technologies include next-generation batteries (lithium-ion, sodium, redox flow), thermal storage, pumped hydro and green hydrogen. Main beneficiaries include Iberdrola (around €20 million across six projects), Solara4 Phase4 S.A. (€16.4 million) and Revendosol (€14.75 million), alongside Galp Parques Fotovoltaicos, Greenvolt and pulp-and-paper companies (Navigator, Celbi and Caima).

  • Installation of at least 500 MW of storage capacity on the public grid
  • Greater efficiency in renewable energy use, reducing waste
  • Contribution to the targets of the National Energy and Climate Plan 2030
