Portugal’s Ministry of the Environment and Climate Action closed a EUR 100 million public tender for the installation of large-scale batteries. It received 76 applications, with total proposed capacity nearly three times the initial target of 500 MW and a minimum capacity of 1000 MWh by the end of 2025.

The role of artificial intelligence

Operating batteries profitably requires real-time market decisions, something already done using artificial intelligence in markets such as the UK and Germany. Portugal is still behind in this field, both in installed capacity and operational know-how, and the tender is seen as a step toward developing independent "in front of the meter" batteries and local companies specialised in smart grid management.
