Batteries and Green Hydrogen: Portugal Boosts Support with EUR 60M

A new EUR 60 million envelope under the PRR reinforces energy storage, and Brussels has given green hydrogen projects more time.

Battery system for renewable energy storage

As part of the review of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), the Government reinforced Grid Flexibility and Storage with a new EUR 60 million envelope. The funding is earmarked for installing large-scale batteries near renewable generation centres and at strategic points of the electricity grid, addressing peaks in solar and wind output that are currently lost for lack of storage capacity.

More time for green hydrogen

Until now, PRR funds had to be spent and projects completed by December 2026. The European Commission approved a reprogramming that allows battery and green hydrogen investments to be extended until 2029 in specific cases, provided the projects are shown to be critical to European energy security. The plan also strengthens incentives for solar-panel installations that include batteries, rather than solar panels alone.
