The Portuguese government launched a EUR 75 million financial support programme for Renewable Energy Communities (CER) — groups of citizens, companies or local authorities that join together to collectively produce, consume, store and sell renewable energy, increasing energy self-sufficiency and reducing costs.

Objectives of the EUR 75 million support

  • Encourage the creation of new CERs.
  • Support small and medium-scale local projects, such as solar panels or storage systems.
  • Reduce energy poverty in vulnerable communities.
  • Promote sustainable consumption practices.
  • Increase energy autonomy from external and fossil sources.

The programme is expected to drive the decentralisation of energy production, regional development and the fulfilment of Portugal's climate targets, while strengthening community involvement in the energy transition.
