The first methodology for the Voluntary Carbon Market (MVC) in Portugal is under public consultation, with launch expected in the second half of 2025. Focused on forestry projects, it establishes criteria for quantifying and verifying emission reductions and carbon capture through reforestation and sustainable forest management.
What the methodology must include
- Project eligibility and additionality criteria.
- Methods for quantifying emission reductions or carbon capture.
- Project duration and possibility of renewal.
- Risk mitigation strategies, including reversal of emissions.
- Monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) requirements.
Approval is coordinated by the Technical Monitoring Committee, led by APA, together with ICNF and DGRM. The MVC registration platform, developed by ADENE, is expected to be operational in the second half of 2025.
