World Climate Action Day: 24 October

World Climate Action Day, marked on 24 October, was established to mobilise people, governments and organisations around initiatives that reduce the environmental impact of human activities, through educational campaigns, demonstrations and local actions such as tree planting and encouraging renewable energy.

Objectives of the day

• Raise global awareness of the impacts of climate change.
• Promote concrete action, such as using renewables and reducing waste.
• Push for more effective climate policies, including compliance with the Paris Agreement.
• Foster climate justice, since the poorest populations are the most affected.
• Mobilise civil society and young people, notably through movements such as Fridays for Future.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warns that global warming must be limited to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. The Paris Agreement, signed in 2015, sets emissions reduction targets and a commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050, although progress has been slow.
