Native Forests vs. Production Forests: What Are the Differences and Benefits?

Native forests, such as oak and holm-oak groves, sustain biodiversity and climate regulation, while production forests — mainly eucalyptus and pine, with 7-to-12-year cutting cycles — drive the economy but require sustainable management.

Comparison between native forest and production forest

Native forests are made up of plant species native to a region, having evolved naturally without human intervention. In Portugal these include oak groves, holm-oak groves, cork oak stands and strawberry-tree woodlands, and they play key roles in soil and water conservation, climate change mitigation through carbon absorption, and sustaining local biodiversity. Production forests, managed to generate timber, paper, pulp and other resources, are split into natural production forests (with selective cutting and regeneration) and planted forests, such as eucalyptus and pine, with cutting cycles of 7 to 12 years.

Comparing impacts

Native forests offer greater biodiversity, lower water consumption, lower flammability and high long-term carbon capture capacity, though with more limited financial returns (except in cases like cork production). Production forests, especially eucalyptus, have high productivity and fast maturation — Portugal is one of the world's largest exporters of eucalyptus-derived paper — but show low biodiversity due to monoculture, higher fire risk, and eucalyptus is known to consume large volumes of water, potentially affecting water tables.
