The Most Used Sustainable Energy Sources in Portugal
Wind, solar PV, hydro and biomass lead Portugal's renewable electricity mix, according to APREN data.
According to APREN data for the first quarter of 2024, Portugal has made significant progress toward a more sustainable energy mix, with these sources playing a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and promoting energy security.
- Wind energy: generally contributes between 25% and 30% of total electricity production
- Solar PV: generally contributes between 5% and 10% of total production
- Hydroelectric energy: historically one of the main sources, with seasonally variable contribution
- Biomass: generally contributes between 5% and 10% of total production, also used for heating
- Geothermal energy: significant electricity production only on São Miguel island, Azores
