Free DGT LiDAR: 10cm Survey for Mainland Portugal
DGT is making the PRR-funded LiDAR survey of mainland Portugal freely available, with 10cm vertical accuracy and a density of 10 points per m².
The LiDAR survey of mainland Portugal, funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), delivers an extremely high-precision altimetric dataset covering the entire territory. Data collection began in April 2024 and the full raw dataset was completed in March 2025, with a phased public release since then.
Technical specifications
- Average density of 10 points/m² in LAZ format, with 10cm vertical accuracy and 30cm horizontal accuracy.
- Each point includes RGB and Near-Infrared (NIR) color attributes, aiding vegetation analysis.
- Derived models — Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and Digital Surface Model (DSM) — available at 0.5m and 2m resolution.
- LAS classification by category: terrain, vegetation (low, medium, high), buildings, water, noise and bridges.
As of October 2025, about 90% of the territory's data was already freely available via the DGT Data Center and the Open Data Portal, with only the northwest region still pending. The data supports the Rustic Property Cadastre, the Land Use Monitoring System (SMOS), urban planning, forest management and civil protection.
