Did You Know Portugal Has About 260 Wind Farms in 2024?

Portugal has about 260 wind farms and 5.5 GW installed, but more than half of that capacity is 15 to 20 years old.

Portugal currently has about 260 wind farms, corresponding to roughly 5.5 GW of installed capacity. Many were built between 2004 and 2010, a period of strong investment driven by renewable-support policies, and about 52% of current installed capacity comes from turbines aged between 15 and 20 years.

PNEC 2030 Targets

  • 10.4 GW of onshore wind capacity by 2030, against an interim target of 6.3 GW by 2025
  • 2 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030
  • Overall goal of 80% renewable electricity generation by 2030

Wind power is today the country's second-largest renewable source, behind only hydro, contributing to more than 50% of national electricity coming from renewable sources. The ageing of these wind farms reinforces the need for maintenance and modernisation in the coming decades.
