Portugal is preparing its first offshore wind auction, aiming to install 2 GW by 2030, an estimated investment of €9 billion and the creation of thousands of jobs.
Portugal is preparing its first offshore wind auction, aiming to install 2 gigawatts (GW) of capacity by 2030, representing an estimated investment of €9 billion. According to estimates from APREN – Portuguese Renewable Energy Association, the project could inject up to €1.7 billion into national GDP and create between 5,000 and 13,561 jobs. Initially planned for 2023, the auction was postponed due to the complexity of technical procedures and political changes, with the Government expecting approval of the maritime areas by the end of 2024.
From WindFloat Atlantic to the New Auction
Portugal currently has only 0.03 GW of installed offshore wind capacity, through the WindFloat Atlantic project — mainland Europe's first floating offshore wind farm, with 25 MW. The new auction represents a significant scale-up from this experience, and forms part of the national strategy for decarbonisation and energy security, aligned with EU targets and the Paris Agreement.
